Surrendering To Nature’s Rhythms

One of the main principles of Ayurveda is that aligning one’s habits with the natural cycles leads to optimal health.

When we go to bed, when we rise, when we eat, when we work, when we exercise, when we relax … all of these activities can be synchronized with the sun, the moon, the seasons, and various energetic qualities that are present throughout the 24-hour day/night cycle, the yearly seasonal cycle, and even the different stages of the life cycle.

I have been experimenting with Ayurvedic living for eight years and I still at times find myself going against the flow of nature. Maybe the sun is way past set and I’m ramping up to do more work on my computer instead of winding down for bed. Or maybe it’s morning time and even as the sun is rising, I am groggy and wanting to pull the covers over my head and go back to sleep.

It’s an ongoing journey of exploring the habits suggested by Ayurveda. What I DO love is having the confidence to know that if I actually just surrender to nature’s rhythms, I feel best! Of course, it’s not always possible. But when I do have a choice, it’s getting easier and easier for me to say “Just do it. Just put away the work and get to bed. Or … just get out of bed, greet the sun, and take advantage of the early morning’s life-giving energy.”

I’m always SO grateful when I do.

Natural cycles are always there … welcoming us to fall in rhythm with them if we can let go into their healing cadence. What I sense is that they’ve lovingly got our backs.
